Box Score IMMACULATA, Pa.- The third-seeded Immaculata women's lacrosse team will be making their third consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Semifinal appearance on Wednesday at No. 2 Neumann after pulling away in the second half of the CSAC Quarterfinals on Saturday and defeating the No. 6 Notre Dame of Maryland University Gators, 18-6. Danielle Lopez helped the Mighty Macs (11-5) win their program-record sixth straight game with a career-high and school record-tying eight goals on the afternoon.
Freshman
Hannah Verrecchia had four goals and an assist in the game, and junior
Allison Jakavick collected six points with three goals and three assists. Junior
Kelly Lapp also had six points behind one goal and five assists, and junior
Shannon Neill added four points with one goal and three helpers.
Lapp led the team with five groundballs, and freshman
Brittany Whaley had a strong game defensively with four groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Sophomore
Christine McIntyre (11-5) made four saves in the win.
The Mighty Macs were dominant in the second half, outscoring the Gators (6-8) by a count of 10-2 after halftime, but the first half was tightly contested.
Immaculata would get on the board first as Verrecchia scored on an assist from Lapp just under three minutes in, but the Gators responded to tie the game at 1-1. Lopez scored her first of the game just 24 seconds after the Gators tied it, but again the Gators tied the game at 2-2 at the 23:31 mark.
The Macs gave themselves a little bit of breathing room by scoring three consecutive goals in less than three minutes to take a 5-2 lead midway through the first half. Jakavick scored the first on a free position attempt before Lopez scored back-to-back goals on assists from Neill and Jakavick for the three-goal advantage.
Notre Dame halted the run with a goal at the 10:46 mark, but the Mighty Macs would reel off three more to swell their lead to 8-3 behind goals from Verrecchia, Lopez, and Lapp. The Gators scored a goal with three seconds remaining in the first half to send the teams to the locker room with the Macs in front 8-4.
The teams swapped goals to start the second half within 35 seconds of each other as Lopez picked up where she left off with her fifth of the day. Leading 9-5 with 27:03 to go, the Mighty Macs scored nine straight goals and kept the Gators off the scoreboard for just shy of 24 minutes to take command of the game.
Jakavick, Verrecchia, and Lopez twice netted goals in less than two minutes to quickly grow the lead to 13-5.
Five minutes later, Neill and Jakavick (her team-leading 48
th of the season) put IU at a 10-goal advantage. Whaley would get in on the offense and Verrecchia scored her fourth before Lopez set a career-high with her eighth on the day to wrap up the Mighty Mac scoring. Notre Dame got one in the waning moments to get to the final of 18-6.
The Mighty Macs will now set their sights on No. 2 Neumann on Wednesday in the CSAC Semifinals as they seek their first CSAC Championship game appearance.
