ASTON, Pa.- The Immaculata men's tennis team is making its first appearance in program history in the CSAC Championships after a record-setting 2013 season. The Mighty Macs were 10-4 with a 6-1 record in conference play which earned them the number-two seed in the conference tournament and a matchup with the third seeded Baptist Bible College Defenders on Friday afternoon in Easton, Pennsylvania. The winner of that semifinal will play the winner of the matchup between the fourth-seeded Neumann University Knights and top-seeded Marywood University Pacers.
The matchup with Baptist Bible will be a rematch of the schools from Saturday, April 6
th when the Mighty Macs narrowly topped the Defenders by a score of 5-4.
Immaculata is led by the CSAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year, sophomore
Troy Donato, who went 11-3 this season and 6-1 in conference play. He became the first Mighty Mac men's tennis player to receive the conference's top honor. In conference play this season, his only loss came to Baptist Bible's Caleb Evans in the first position singles by a score of 6-2, 3-6, 4-6. Donato will be looking to avenge that loss in Friday's semifinal matchup.
In the second singles' position, senior
Joe Walker had a solid season with a 7-7 mark overall and 3-4 in CSAC play. Walker did get one of his conference victories against Baptist Bible earlier this season and the senior will look to do the same. He topped Adam Benjamin 6-4, 6-1 in the team's win in April.
Second Team All-CSAC member senior
Eric Schmidt will compete out of the third singles position for the Mighty Macs tomorrow afternoon after a steady 2013 campaign. Schmidt was 7-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play. One of his CSAC losses came at the hands of Baptist Bible's Connor Ellsworth by scores of 2-6, 3-6.
Rookie and Honorable Mention All-CSAC member freshman Nicholas Coia will occupy the fourth singles position and look to continue the momentum from his big first season. He was 9-5 overall and a solid 5-2 in CSAC play, but like Schmidt, one of his losses was to Baptist Bible by a score of 0-6, 3-6.
Senior
T.J. Klinger joined Donato on the First Team All-CSAC with an outstanding final season as a member of the Mighty Mac men's tennis team. He was a team-best 12-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in CSAC competition this season. He won 6-2, 6-2 in the fifth singles position against Baptist Bible earlier this season.
In the sixth and final singles position, senior
Todd Stokley will look to build upon his Second Team All-CSAC season. He went 11-2 overall and 6-1 in CSAC play with his only defeat coming at the hands of Marywood in the final conference match of the season. Against Baptist Bible in April, Stokley won easily 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles play, the Mighty Macs will present three All-CSAC pairings who collectively went 25-17 overall and 13-8 in CSAC play. In the first doubles position, Donato and Coia were named Honorable Mention All-CSAC with an 8-6 overall record and 4-3 in conference play. Previously against Baptist Bible, the pair lost 8-6.
Fellow Honorable Mention All-CSAC pairing, Walker and Klinger will play in the second doubles position. They had the best record overall at 9-5 and were also 4-3 in CSAC play. They won in doubles against the Defenders 8-2.
The final pairing of Schmidt and Stokley were Second Team All-CSAC with a team-best 5-2 record in conference play. They also won earlier this month by a score of 8-2.
The match will start about an hour after the meeting between Marywood and Neumann, which is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
