LYNCHBURG, Va. – Immaculata Univeristy baseball was swept by Lynchburg College in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon, 2-0 and 7-1.
Lynchburg's Ryan McDonough tossed a no-hitter in the opener.
Patrick Boulware was the Mighty Macs only base runner, as he reached in the fourth inning on a fielding error by the Hornet's center fielder. Boulware stole second, but was left there.
Aaron Dietrich started and went six innings for Immaculata in the first game. He allowed two runs on five hits, and walked four and struck out two. Dietrich is now 0-1 this season.
Lynchburg (5-2) broke through in the bottom of the fourth as Chris Colquhoun had a sacrifice fly to score Jeff Taylor Jr. The Hornets added an insurance run in the fifth as Taylor Jr. had an RBI single.
In the nightcap, both teams recorded seven hits but it was Lynchburg that broke through with the 7-1 win. Both
Rick Gehman and
Joseph Caria finished the game with two hits, and
David News had an RBI for the Mighty Macs (0-3).
After the Hornets scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, they began to pull away in the third when Richie Palase hit a three-run homer to give Lynchburg a 5-0 lead. The Hornets added another run in the fourth and tacked on one more in the sixth.
Immaculata scored its run in the sixth as
Richard Cusic walked to lead off the inning, and came around to score as News reached on a fielder's choice.
Cusic got the start in game two and lasted three and two-third innings in the loss. He allowed six runs, only three earned, on four hits. He walked five and fanned three batters.
Lynchburg starter Jared Millner went four and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs on three hits. Robert Garrett came in and got the win as he struck out two in one and a third innings of work.
Immaculata concludes its Spring Trip tomorrow at Shenandoah for a 3 p.m. start.
