FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Rick Gehman was 3-for-4 and Kris Hazlett had an RBI double, but Immaculata fell to Methodist, 22-3, in its inaugural opener Wednesday evening.
Immaculata University opened its very first season of baseball Wednesday evening with an excellent showing at the plate. The Mighty Macs scored three runs on nine hits and trailed 6-1 entering the bottom half of the fourth inning.
Immaculata’s Matt Hardy led off the top of the fourth with a single and Joe Rawlings followed with a walk. Those two runners moved up on a passed ball after one batter struck out. Chris Dickinson then drew a two-out walk after another strikeout, and Andrew Dietrich collected the Mighty Macs’ first RBI in program history with a single through the right side scoring Hardy from third.
Kris Hazlett registered an RBI double in the fifth, and Rawlings picked up Immaculata’s other RBI in the game.
Hardy finished 2-for-5 at the plate with a run scored.
Kevin Leitzel (0-1) made the historic start and lasted 3.1 innings. He allowed five earned runs and recorded the program’s first strikeout when he fanned Methodist’s Xavier Mayo in the fourth inning before exiting.
Methodist’s Brian Halpin went 4-for-5 at the plate to pace the Monarchs’ offensive effort. Hunter Ennis (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for Methodist. He started and went four innings, giving up one run on three hits. He walked three and struck out six.
Immaculata will be at Lynchburg tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
